The Center for the Intrepid is a private project funded by The
Intrepid Fallen Hero Fund. It is located on Ft Sam Houston at
BAMC. The project is design build with a suspended structure
with an elliptical footprint. Along with the building pad, excavation
was required for the indoor pool and road subgrades. As with
other military projects, coordination was crucial due to the
ongoing military activities and pedestrian traffic. The site
is highly secure, requiring vehicle inspections and ID badges
on a daily basis.

Demolition crews contributed first on this project. Demolition
activities included asbestos abatement, mercury and lead paint
removal and the demolition of an existing four story dormitory.
Afterwards, site crews graded the site, provided and placed
asphalt paving and constructed a building pad with four foot
grade beams in a grid pattern. The grade beams for the foundation
were designed in such close proximity with each other that the
common approach to building pads and grade beams would not be
productive. Instead, site crews excavated to the bottom of the
grade beams and waited until after the grade beams were placed
before backfilling. Crews used four bobcats and jumping jacks
to backfill and compact the material since conveyor systems
were too small for the pad.
